Chapter Fourteen
West flopped back in his chair and closed his eyes in frustration. The ME had pushed Celiaâs body to the front of the list due to her unusual circumstances, but the report told him almost nothing. The cause of death was inconclusive, the time frame of death was impossible to determine as well. Celiaâs body was nothing theyâd ever seen before.
âBad time?â
âYouâre early, but no itâs not bad at all. Come in,â West greeted with a soft smile. âI could use the break.â
Rook smiled. âGood, because I come bearing gifts.â He held up the bags of food. âA little birdie told me you hadnât eaten, so I took the liberty.â
âItâs smells wonderful.â West stood and moved to take the bag from Rook. âHave a seat, let me run and grab a couple cans of soda to wash this down with.â
West couldnât stop grinning as he raced out of his office, down the hall and into the small kitchenette.
âSodaâs on the bottom shelf. I just restocked, so they might be a tad warm. Better grab some ice too,â Constance informed him as she walked by.
âThanks, you deserve a raise.â He hollered back as he loaded his arms with drinks and cups of ice.
He slowed down to a normal walking pace as he drew near his office and had to laugh silently at himself. He was acting like a lovesick fool, but one glance at Rook and he didnât care. West smiled as he placed the cups and drinks down and turned to close the door. âHope you donât mind. Iâd like to eat in peace, and if the door is open theyâll be in here every two minutes for something or other. Usually bullshit things too.â
âThatâs fine, I have to admit I donât know whatâs in the bags. Frankie, the chef down at the diner, put it together for me. Iâve never had anything of his I didnât like though, thatâs something at least,â Rook babbled nervously.
âIâm not picky. Iâm just excited to have something hot to eat and good company to eat with.â
West tried to think of something witty and amusing to say into the awkward silence as Rook pulled out the containers, but his mind was coming up blank. He was too nervous and excited.
âWhere were you before you moved to Blue Creek?â
Finally, thank you Rook, West thought, as he grabbed one of the containers and moved to sit beside him. âI was an Army brat, so Iâm from all over honestly. I was up in Michigan most recently. Grew tired of the big city and freezing temperatures. How about you, have you always lived here?â
âYup, love it here. Canât really imagine going anywhere else.â Rook hesitated, bit his lip and glanced at West. âCan I ask you a personal question?â
He was a goner for sure. Heâd only met the man just over twenty-four hours ago, and all he could think about was how adorable Rook was when he was nervous.
âThatâs okay, sorry,â Rook said sheepishly.
âNo, I got sidetracked.
